How Important Is Lighting In Interior Design?

Lighting is one of the most important elements in interior design, that offers functional illumination for each space needed. Lighting is widely used in different areas indoor and outdoor, such as garden lighting, street lighting, commercial lighting, fanky industrial lighting, hospital lighting, home lighting, etc. Lighting recreates unique sensations and experiences, even can completely change a design. They can be technical, with a design that serves their function, but they can also play a decorative role. Expertly placed lighting adds another dimension to space, bringing an interior design project to life.

The type of light used will depend on the experience you want to create. When lighting for a home, the kitchen is a workspace that demands brighter and higher CRI  light, while the living room and bedroom need softer and warmer lighting. Accent light is considered where you want to highlight the feature of unique artwork and objects. Be sure your favorite piece of art is properly lit so that you and your guests can enjoy and appreciate it. Mix direct light with indirect light to create different environments.

Lighting is a personal component, just like furniture, each house must truly reflect the wishes of its owners. With continued research and innovation in lighting,  homeowners and designers have many options when it comes to select the right lighting to set the right mood for their space.

What Are The 3 Basic Types Of Lighting?

There are three basic lighting types that can work together to illuminate your house:  ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting. Each of the three types of lighting has a particular function to fulfill specific needs. When planning the layers of light in a room, it usually makes sense to consider the ambient lighting first, then consider task and accent lighting.

Ambient lighting is intended to light up a room in its entirety. Also known as general lighting, ambient lighting emits comfortable brightness, allowing people to see and move around safely. Types of fixtures that can provide ambient lighting: chandeliers, ceiling lights, wall lamps, track lights, LED downlights, table lamps, and floor lamps. It's the basis of a lighting plan that replaces daylight.

Task lighting can provide increased light for tasks that require accuracies, such as reading, homework, sewing, cooking, small repairs, model construction, and many other activities. It can be provided by desk lamps, wall-mounted swing-arm lamps, task floor lamps, under-cabinet lights, track lighting, kitchen island pendant lights. For these sorts of tasks, brighter light is required, avoid glare and shadows.

Accent lighting is directed right at the things that you want to be illuminated, bringing attention to beloved elements, it's used to highlight artwork, plants, souvenirs, textured walls, sculptures, and so on. Accent lights can also be used outdoors as guides for pathways or to spotlight garden art. Accent lighting requires at least three times as much focus light as the ambient lighting generally provides. Some of the most common accent lighting fixtures include track lights, picture lights, wall sconces, focal point suspensions.
